There may be more submissions that need to go up (and if you sent me something but it either isn’t up or I never responded, please tell me!), but this is most of them.

A little rant: Warner Bros. is yanking copies of the PoDW episodes off YouTube. (The previous guy hosting them had all the episodes yanked and his account suspended. Somebody new is hosting them, but WB has started yanking his episodes now, too.) It bothers me, since there’s no legal way to watch the show and they seem to be in no rush to rerelease it. There are still plenty of other ways to get the show, but it still is very annoying and offputting.

Anyway…good night!

Notice something different?

Same site…different name. Farewell, Andorus’s Pirates of Dark Water Page. Hello, Always The Quest.

(At last!)

I’d put out a call for a new name a little while ago. This was one I’d thought about, then revisited after a couple of you guys also suggested it (thank you very much!), and realized that it just…works.

Not to mention, “Andorus’s Pirates of Dark Water Page”? Seriously? That name has not changed since the inception of this site in the summer of 1996–ancient history in web years! And this is no longer simply a “page,” nor has it been in nearly 14 years. (For those who are unclear about the distinction, a page is one individual part of a site. What you are reading now is on its own page. The larger whole of which it is a part is a website.)

Anyway, moving on!

Thank you very much for your suggestions for my paper! I submitted it yesterday–my professor had suggested I rework it into a letter, which ended up feeling far more natural–and will be posting that here once I get it back and make any edits he suggests. 🙂 This could very well be the seed needed to start a full-fledged letter-writing campaign…especially since I was able to track down an address for Warner Home Video…

We’re in the middle of “finals week”–I have no final exams, per se, but plenty of final projects and papers. There’s still a lot more coming up, but I’m giving myself a break tonight and hope to update a few other things on the site, to attempt to chip away at this massive backlog of updates. I have started experimenting with different online plugins and tools for a more streamlined site redesign and to give myself a chance to mess around with modern web technologies as well–maybe that’ll finally come to fruition this summer.

On a general animation note, I was lucky enough to purchase a copy of The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston at a used bookstore today for only $20! It is said to be one of THE best books on character animation, as well as animation generally, and it was written by two of Disney’s Nine Old Men, or a team of their original animators who created so many of their original characters. I am so thrilled about this, and can’t wait to have a chance to really read/look through it!

So, anyway. Yay, new name! This has been a long time coming and I’m glad for it. Hope you all like it!

Want to help me with a paper?

As part of a writing seminar course, I have to write an “argument” paper. As part of a little bet I had with myself to see if I could work PoDW into my coursework somehow, I’m arguing that PoDW should be revisited and/or released on DVD.

The question is: why?

Beyond just helping me out, this could be a good exercise in general. Why do we want PoDW out on DVD, or why do we want a remake? Is it to have a high-quality version for ourselves and revisit old memories? To introduce new audiences to the show? To hopefully get some insight on how the story would have ended through some kind of “extras” reel? To honor the fact that it was this great (if slightly obscure) jewel of American TV animation? What other reasons come to mind?

Please post away–it would be interesting to see your input and your motivations for wanting this. 🙂 Thanks!

Liveblogging the Warner Home Video chat

Okay, I was able to ask my question: “Hi! I wanted to ask about The Pirates of Dark Water. Does Warner Bros. have any plans to release it to DVD, or otherwise revisit it, in the foreseeable future? Thousands of fans have been hoping for a DVD release for years, and it seems like it would receive a great reception when the new Pirates of Caribbean movie comes out next year. Thanks!”

…and got an almost immediate response: Warner Home Video has no plans to release Pirates of Dark Water on DVD at this time.

Sigh. The whole format of this chat session has been very fast, and their answers have (for the most part) been very vague, unless they actually had forthcoming plans for releases or something else. I was a little surprised at how quickly they shot it down–does that mean they were anticipating it?

But at least I asked it, and several highly-ranking VPs saw the name of the show pop up before their eyes. That has to count for something. (Many thanks to Nathan for the addition of the Pirates of the Caribbean reference. I ran out of space before I could use the phrase “capitalize on its release,” though, but the idea is there.)

(Oh, and they butchered my name and referred to me as SmithAP, even though I had myself there as “SmithaP,” since, you know, that’s my name and all. That was a little irksome, haha.)

Read on for a list of all the titles that have been addressed, though!

* * * * *

A couple of us are in the chat right now. (E-mail me and let me know if you’re there! My chat handle is SmithaP.)

To refresh your memories, this chat involves several executives with the Marketing Department at Warner Home Video: Amit Desai (VP – Family, Animation, and Partner Brands Marketing), Rosemary Markson (VP – TV and Special Interest Marketing), and Melissa Hufjay McAlevey (VP – Marketing), and potentially some members of their teams. The chat tonight is solely about TV and animation. I’m bolding answers related to animation.

Reminder: Warner Home Video chat, April 5

A week from today is the Home Theater Forum chat with Warner Home Video. If you can, please be sure to tune in: it runs from 5 PM to 8 PM Pacific (so 8PM-11PM Eastern).

As mentioned in the previous post, this is a rare chance for Pirates of Dark Water fans to mobilize and talk directly to someone with AOL Time Warner about the show! It’s Turner Home Video that’s been releasing the Hanna-Barbera series on DVD, but just planting the seed of awareness with someone “official” could be a very promising first step, and they may have some insight on how to contact THV. Please mark your calendars and spread the word!

Internet Explorer 6

Recently I (finally) implemented Google Analytics for this site, and it has revealed some very interesting things. The most interesting (and alarming) has been that a non-negligible number of visitors to this website use the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 web browser.

This is in no way meant as an insult or attack, but I have to know: why? Are you viewing this site at work, where you’re required to use it? Or do you have it installed at home?

I ask because Internet Explorer 6 has been horribly outdated for many years now. IE8 has been available for quite a while, but even IE7 would be a huge advancement. There are so many online technologies and advancements that IE6 does not support (read: butchers horribly). Virtually nobody supports IE6 anymore–YouTube is dropping support shortly, too. I can only imagine how horrible this site looks in it…

I also ask because the site redesign I’m working on (slowly but steadily) WILL NOT WORK with Internet Explorer 6. The minimum standard will be Internet Explorer 7 (though Firefox and Safari are recommended). If you are using 6, I would HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to upgrade to 7, or just use Firefox if you can.

Far more importantly, though, beyond just being able to view this site properly, using Internet Explorer 6 is a major security hazard. An alternative like Mozilla Firefox is proven to be pretty stable and far more secure–as opposed to IE6, which has some major issues with security that can lead to you being hacked and exploited. For your own good, it would be a REALLY good idea to change your browser.

(Don’t let this lead you to think the site redesign is anywhere near complete, though…sigh. Maybe this summer. Hopefully!)

In other news, I actually (sadly enough) had a dream the other night where I was anxious about having to miss the upcoming Warner Home Video Chat in April because of a conflicting orchestra rehearsal. Such is my life these days. At least it’s spring break now (the “break” part is negotiable, but it’s still been really nice). Hope you’re all doing well, and don’t forget about that home video chat–the more people we can have in there to inquire about the possibility of a PoDW DVD, the more effective we can be!

Warner Home Video chat, and another Star Wars/PoDW update

Nathan has kindly passed on this excellent piece of news. If you are interested in an official PoDW DVD release, check this out. We as the fans have a chance to make ourselves heard.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Site-News-2010-HTF-WHV-Chat/13319

“…a new Warner Home Video Television and Animation Live Online Chat has been scheduled at last. The official announcement will be made next week at their own website, but they didn’t have a problem with us breaking the news that this event is finally on the way! The scheduled date is Monday, April 5th, from 5PM Pacific Time to 8PM Pacific Time. Topics, of course, will be strictly limited to Television and Animation questions.”

Technically, it’s Turner Home Entertainment that has been releasing the old Hanna-Barbera series on DVD. They all are part of Warner Bros., though, so this could be a window in to see who we can go to about this.

I will try to be there. If any of you are around and willing to check in, that would also be great–the more voices, the better. Spread the word! But please do be good representatives of our rather ragtag fandom. 😉 It’s rare that we have chances for people to pay attention to us as a group!

* * * * *

In other news, it turns out that the Star Wars: Legacy comic is not the origin of the “Loz noy jitat” curse. In fact, its first mention was in a short story by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, titled “Medstar: Intermezzo,” an interlude short story between the novels in the Medstar duology in the Star Wars expanded universe novel series. This short story appears in Star Wars Insider Magazine #83, which was released in July 2005 and predates the comic by at least a year. So this pair of authors are the actual closet PoDW fans in the Star Wars universe. 🙂

Have a good weekend, everybody!

PoDW reference in Star Wars: Legacy #5!

Apparently John Ostrander, the writer of the Star Wars: Legacy comics, is a closet Pirates of Dark Water fan!

I was going through the site’s referral logs and came across a Wizards of the Coast forum thread, where a fan named Brian brought up a possible PoDW RPG and also referenced the show’s similarities to Star Wars. (I love the Yuuzhan Vong reference, by the way–darker and more deadly than most PoDW biotechnology, but still a fun parallel.)

He also mentioned that a character in the comic, Jariah Syn, actually says “Noy Jitat.”

I asked around, and it turns one of my online friends happens to own the comic. She was able to confirm it: in issue #5, there is a dialogue blurb coming from a ship that reads, “Loz noy jitat.” (A number of people have mistaken/mis-remembered Ioz’s name as “Loz” over the years, soooo…)

My mind is BLOWN. In all my years of maintaining this site, I have NEVER heard of any references to PoDW in any popular media. How awesome!

In searching around, tvtropes.org even mentions it on their Star Wars: Legacy entry–PoDW is one of a number of series whose vernacular are referenced in this series (yay, BSG and Farscape!). I’m still trying to ascertain the actual context, but this is pretty cool even without that!

Do any of you keep up with SW: Legacy? (It’s about Cade Skywalker, a descendant of Luke, in the distant and dark future of the Star Wars galaxy–I’ve heard of it but never read it.) Are there any other PoDW references, swear words, etc. that you know of? Or even better, have you come across any other PoDW references in other places over the years? I’d love to hear about anything you’ve found.

eek!

Since our classes have been canceled for a 3rd consecutive day due to very snowy conditions, I’m doing some behind-the-scenes maintenance…and in the process, I came to realize that the comics pages look horrible. The copyright statement overlaps the image, the navigation isn’t centered…yikes! Is this just a Mac thing, or do PC/Linux users have the same issue?

Please do me a favor: if you happen to notice ANYTHING on the site that is either broken or that looks odd, no matter how silly or inconsequential you think it is, PLEASE send me a message. Even if it may take months (no joke…this is a really, really busy semester) for me to make the update, I really would like to know about it, because otherwise I may never come across it on my own.

Thank you so much for your help in advance–I really appreciate it. 🙂

Storyboards and concept art online

It took a few hours of work, but it’s just good to have it out of the way. 🙂 I’ve just uploaded over 150 photos of storyboards from The Quest and some concept art, like of Bloth’s pirates and the like, to a collection on my Flickr account, and included some commentary/analysis, some of it serious and some of it joking. 🙂

The storyboards are mostly of cut/deleted/edited material. The concept art is mostly of Bloth’s pirates, but also includes a couple of pages with alternate spellings. The crazy thing: some of Bloth’s pirates actually had names! But ironically, those were the pirates that showed up maybe twice and had no lines–the ones that did make regular appearances were just named “Pirate #3”. Oh, well.

And I apologize that these photos are unedited and not the greatest–I took these all the night before I left Atlanta to return to Pittsburgh, and since there are over 500 pages in this packet, scanning them would be an immense undertaking. (As if I’m not behind on keeping the rest of the site updated already…)

Anyway, enjoy!
